Honey & Cinnamon Granola

This is a very simple breakfast granola recipe base that you can add your own dried fruits to make your own homemade granola. This version doesn't use any nuts so it's suitable for those with allergies and school lunches! Our favourite variations include choc-chip and mixed berry, but this recipe is so basic it suits a huge variety of add-ins.

Honey & Cinnamon Granola

You can add dried fruit or choc-chips for your own flavour!

Makes: About 6 cups
Prep time: 10 mins (+ 25 mins cooking time)

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup coconut flakes
  • 1/4 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1/2 cup melted coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup chopped dried fruit or choc chips (if desired)

Cooking Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 160C. Line a large baking sheet with baking paper and set it aside.
  2. In a large bowl add oats, sunflower seeds, coconut, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Stir to combine.
  3. In a separate jug, stir together the oil and honey until combined. Pour the oil mixture into the oat mixture and stir well until evenly coated.
  4. Spread granola mixture evenly on the prepared baking sheet. Bake, stirring every 5 minutes for 20-25 minutes or until toasted and golden. Set aside to cool completely.
  5. Once cool, stir through any dried fruits or chocolate chips. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 month.

Notes:

  • There are many dried fruits you can add including apples, apricots, mangoes, pawpaw, sultanas, figs or dates!
  • We use mini dark chocolate chips for our chocolate variety
  • You can easily add any nuts you like to this mix, just add them with the oats before you toast everything.
  • You can also swap out the honey for another sweetener, but it does change the flavour.

I have a super fussy kid who won't eat any cereal, except this granola! In my opinion, it makes it a truly winning recipe. I have intentionally used less sugar than traditional granola because it's really not necessary when you have sweet dried fruits in it. I like my coconut really well toasted and crispy but you can add it later during the baking if you prefer it less toasted. We have tried so many homemade granola recipes and there are probably millions out there, but this is our favourite combination of sweet honey and a dash of cinnamon. It has loads of texture and crunch and keeps really well in sealed jars, even in our warm kitchen! We hope you enjoy it too. Leave me a comment below if you have any questions.
