Homemade Caramelized Onions

Caramelized onions are one of the most simple (but delicious!) things you can make to turn basic dishes into something amazing. There are many recipes for caramelized onions around and it's not really a matter of ingredients, but mostly about taking the time to allow them to caramelize properly. It's best to use a cast iron skillet or heavy based frying pan to help distribute the heat and help achieve the lovely golden brown colour to the onions. Other than that, keep it low and let it go slowly... You'll master these caramelized onions in no time!

How to make Caramelized Onions:

Makes: about 1 cup

Prep time: 15 mins (+ 1 hour cooking time)

You'll Need:

  • Two large brown onions
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon salted butter
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • salt and pepper to taste

Cooking Instructions:

  1. Place a cast iron skillet or heavy based frying pan over med-high heat. Trim, peel and slice the onions into even slices (or diced, if you prefer). Add oil and butter to the pan. Once butter has melted, add onions and thyme leaves and combine with a wooden spoon. Continue stirring for 3-5 minutes.
  2. Reduce heat to med-low. Allow to cook for 45 minutes to 1 hour stirring every 5-10 minutes. Season to taste. Use immediately, or allow to cool before transferring to a jar and storing in the fridge.

Notes:

  • We made diced onions this time as we were using them to make an amazing Caramelized Onion and Cheese Loaf.
  • You don't need to add the butter, but it does add a lovely, nutty flavour to the onions.
  • The thyme in this recipe is optional, you can leave it out.

I didn't get a final photo of this so I will have to update this post sometime in the future. I was using the onion straight away and just forgot to take a photo before adding it to the recipe I was making...
